Reading Your Motorcycle Spark Plug: The Small Report Card That Reveals Engine Health

The colour of a spark plug tip can reveal a rich mixture, oil burning in the chamber, or an engine running too hot. Learn the signs before your motorcycle starts stuttering or refuses to start.

The spark plug is a small part most riders rarely think about, yet its tip keeps a detailed record of what happens inside the combustion chamber. Every time the engine runs, the plug fires a spark that ignites the fuel and air mixture, and the leftovers of that combustion settle on its electrode. The colour and texture of those deposits can be read like a health report for the engine, without ever opening the cylinder block.

When to Take a Look

Many riders only pull the spark plug once the bike refuses to start on a cold morning. A quick inspection actually fits neatly into every routine service, or whenever symptoms appear: hesitation in the mid-range, stuttering when the throttle is opened suddenly, an idle that rises and falls, or fuel consumption that feels heavier than usual. These signs are often blamed on the carburettor or injector, while a tired plug may be the simplest explanation.
