When should you change scooter engine oil?

Scooter oil intervals are shorter than many riders assume. Here is a practical guide.

Scooters usually need shorter oil intervals than larger sport bikes because of high revs and different cooling.

Follow the manual—often ~1,000–2,000 km for the first post-break-in change, then about 2,000–4,000 km. Do not rely on “it still feels thick.”

Dark oil alone is not an instant fail, but burnt smell, rapid level drop, or a noisier engine means service soon.

Use the viscosity and API/JASO grade the manufacturer specifies. Cheap mismatched oil can accelerate wear.

Also track final-drive (gear) oil on scooters. Its interval differs and is often ignored until a hum appears.

Log each oil change date and odometer in OTOVA so the next service is hard to miss.
