Vehicle checklist before a long trip home
Thirty minutes of prep at home beats waiting at a roadside workshop.
Start with the trip-killers: tires, brakes, and cooling.
Check pressure and look for cracks, bulges, or loose wheel nuts. Confirm the spare and wheel wrench are present.
Test brakes on a quiet road: no spongy pedal, no pull, no metal scrape.
Check engine oil, coolant (when cold), and brake fluid. Fresh puddles under the car mean stop.
Headlights, signals, brake lights, and hazards must work. Pack jumper cables, a flashlight, and registration papers.
Rest every 2–3 hours. Driver fatigue is more dangerous than a slightly warm engine—but if temperature climbs abnormally, pull over safely and do not push on.
