How To Safely Check Your Car's Brake Condition Yourself

Responsive brakes are key to driving safety. A quick check every 1–2 months—covering brake pads, discs, fluid, and pedal feel—can detect issues early, before costs and risks escalate.

1. Perform quick checks every 1–2 months: inspect brake pads through the wheel rim gaps and check the brake fluid level in the reservoir (MIN–MAX); also, test the brakes gently in a safe area.

2. Watch for warning signs: squeaking noises, vibrations in the pedal or steering wheel, increased braking distance, or a pedal that feels too soft (sinks too deep) or too hard.

3. Focus on key components: brake pad thickness, the condition of disc/drum surfaces (ensure there are no deep scratches), brake fluid volume and color, and pedal feel.

4. Park on level ground, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake before performing a visual inspection at home.

5. DIY checks allow for early detection but do not replace routine professional servicing; if you notice severe wear or reduced performance, visit a workshop immediately.
